Guesstimate Cases
Guesstimates are approximations based on limited information. A guesstimate is an information-based guess, not an accurate answer.
For example, if the case asks "How many people travel through IGI Airport Delhi daily?", the goal is not the exact number. The goal is to show your estimation process using logic and assumptions.
It doesn’t even matter what exact number you arrive at; the process and rationale behind that number matter more.
Guesstimate cases can cover a wide range of topics, including:
- Market Sizing: Estimating the TAM for a product (e.g., number of potential iPhone buyers in India).
- Volume Estimation: Estimating quantities (e.g., how many golf balls fit in a school bus).
- Revenue Projection: Estimating sales or revenue (e.g., daily revenue of a Starbucks in NYC).
- Time and Distance: (e.g., distance traveled by a commuter in a year).
Let’s talk about the “How”
The process is simple: Look at the parameters that affect the final quantity and estimate them. Follow these steps:
- Clarify Assumptions: State any assumptions you need to make to proceed. Ensure transparency in your reasoning.
- Determine Your Approach: Plan before calculating. Use a Top-Down (start with population -> filter down) or Bottom-Up (unit value -> scale up) approach. Communicate your reasoning clearly.
- Break Down the Problem: Create an equation. Break the problem into manageable components and estimate values for each part.
- Round Numbers: Use round numbers (e.g., 7.5B population -> 8B or 7B) to simplify calculations. Approximations are expected.
- Sanity Check: Does your final number make sense? Is it within a plausible range?
Example: Google Search Queries
Case: Calculate the number of queries answered by Google per second.
Approach: Top-Down
1. Calculate Total Search Users
- Global Population: ~7.5B
- Exclude Geographies (China, etc.): Remove 1.5B -> 6B remaining.
- Internet Penetration (50%): 3B internet users.
- Google Market Share (75%): ~2.2B Google users.
2. Segmentation by Usage Frequency Segment users into three types:
- Passive (50%): Don't search daily. ~1.1B users. (0 searches/day for simplicity or very low avg)
- Active (25%): Search once a day. ~550M users.
- Aggressive (25%): Super active (4-8 searches/day, avg 6). ~550M users.
3. Total Daily Searches
- Active: 550M * 1 = 550M
- Aggressive: 550M * 6 = 3.3B
- Total Daily: 550M + 3.3B = 3.8B searches/day
4. Convert to Per Second
- 3.8B / 24 hours / 60 min / 60 sec
- 3.8B / 86,400 seconds ≈ 44,000 searches per second
The numbers above are deliberately rounded assumptions for interview practice, not current market facts. In a real decision, replace the most sensitive inputs with reliable data.
A concise answer structure
- Clarify the geography, time period, unit, and whether the interviewer wants demand, supply, revenue, or capacity.
- State the equation before choosing inputs.
- Segment only where behavior differs enough to change the estimate.
- Calculate aloud with units attached.
- Give a range, test the most sensitive assumption, and sanity-check against a known benchmark.
The logic matters more than false precision. A transparent estimate that can be corrected is more useful than a lucky number with no model behind it.
